Summary

GoodAI, an AI company based in the Czech Republic, in collaboration with Community Crime Prevention (CCP) and Integrated Aerial Systems (IAS), has been utilizing GoodAI Groundstation software to enhance community safety in Hout Bay (Cape Town, South Africa). The project, which began with trials in early 2023, aims to automate drone operations for crime prevention, search and rescue, and emergency response. The successful initial phase will continue from July 2024 for at least one more year, building on the positive impact observed so far.

Project Background

GoodAI specializes in AI-driven solutions to augment human capabilities and leverage the powerful principle of collective intelligence, where AI agents work with humans and each other as a team. One of its flagship projects, GoodAI Groundstation, is designed to simplify and automate drone operations through AI.

This case study explores the application of GoodAI Groundstation in Hout Bay, focusing on community safety in partnership with the non-profit first response and crime-fighting organization CCP, and a certified drone operator company IAS. The work on the Groundstation software, which allows for semi-autonomous drone operations and multi-drone coordination, has been informed by numerous discussions with CCP’s actual first responders.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the GoodAI Groundstation project in Hout Bay are:

  • Crime Prevention: To patrol high-risk areas, detect, and track suspicious activities.

  • Search and Rescue: To autonomously scan and detect persons in wilderness areas.

  • Emergency Response: To quickly deploy drones in response to alerts from CCP’s control room operators and  “panic button” Buzzer app.

  • Community Engagement: To gather feedback from residents and ensure minimal disturbance.

Implementation

Partnerships and Permissions

GoodAI partnered with IAS, a licensed drone company, ensuring compliance with South African Civil Aviation Authority regulations. CCP’s collaboration provided detailed crime statistics and guided the focus areas for drone patrols.

Technology Utilized

GoodAI Groundstation enables:

  • Autonomous Patrolling: Drones patrol designated areas without manual piloting.

  • Object Detection and Tracking: Identifying and following persons or vehicles.

  • Collaborative Missions: Coordination between multiple drones for efficient task management.

  • Emergency Alerts: Integration with CCP’s Buzzer app to send drones to distress signals.

Trials and Feedback

Initial trials in early 2023 tested the Groundstation’s capabilities in real-life scenarios, including crime prevention, search and rescue, and response to emergency alerts. Feedback from CCP and local residents was integral to refining the system and ensuring minimal disruption to the community.

From July 2024, the drone operations will be conducted regularly (multiple times per week or even per day, depending on specific tasks and weather conditions), directly from the CCP’s headquarters in Hout Bay assisted by GoodAI developers. This is a step towards a permanent installation at CCP: we hope that after one year of continuous feedback and consequent iterative improvement, the Groundstation will become an inseparable part of crime prevention and community betterment toolkit in Hout Bay.

Impact and Future Plans

The trials demonstrated the potential of GoodAI Groundstation to enhance community safety in Hout Bay. Key outcomes included faster situational assessments, efficient area coverage, and improved response times to incidents. Given these positive results, the project will continue from July 2024 for at least one more year, aiming to establish a permanent drone program with ongoing community benefits.

Conclusion

GoodAI’s Groundstation project in Hout Bay exemplifies the application of AI to democratize safety and augment human capabilities. By leveraging advanced drone technology, the partnership with CCP and IAS has created a robust framework for community safety, which will continue to evolve and expand in the coming year. The ongoing commitment to this initiative underscores GoodAI’s vision of using AI for positive social impact.
